The Evangelism Committee is mandated to encourage and equip the congregation, both wholly and as individuals, to “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear…” (1 Peter 3:15), proclaiming the gospel message in their daily lives within their community and work environments, by using the two-pronged approach of building up the congregation from within (through the use of speakers, seminars, etc.) and, by bringing the gospel message out through the organizing and planning of events and programs in our community.
What does the committee do?
As a committee, we are responsible for the following:
- Assessing our congregation’s strengths and weaknesses in evangelism, and providing evangelism-related training such as periodical workshops and book club events
- Promoting our church and her ministries by means of advertising and literature (pamphlets, flyers, etc).
- Assisting the congregation in making visitors feel welcome at our worship services and at other church activities, including arranging the host family and greeters for each Sunday.
- Providing the congregation with gospel tracts and outreach material, from a distinctively Reformed perspective.
- Coordinating events for the community in an effort to introduce people to our congregation with the goal of bringing members of our community to Christ. In the past, these events have included:
- A public ‘Genesis’ debate between Richard Preachy (Creationist) and Scott Lewis (Evolutionist)
- Games nights for our congregation and friends of the congregation from our community.
- Speaking events for a CMI speaker, a historian of the Synod of Dort, and Vance Nelson (a Creation speaker)
- Organization of the appointing of VBS coordinators and oversight over the VBS efforts
